Daytona Beach, FL-Update: Health officials have lifted the swimming advisory issued Friday for an area of Daytona Beach near Main Street. The ban was lifted after water test results showed lower bacteria levels.
Earlier reporting: The Florida Department of Health in Volusia County has posted a swimming advisory for the area of the beach near Main Street in Daytona Beach. That comes after water sampling there. Health officials say it is precautionary only and not a closure. Signs have been posted in the area and swimming is not recommended until the advisory is lifted.
The advisory indicates an elevated chance of contracting an infectious disease based on Environmental Protection Agency criteria.
Health officials say elevated bacteria levels found may be due to natural causes and the advisory will be lifted when the levels drop.
The DOH-Volusia tests samples weekly from 13 sites in the county looking for enterococci bacteria which can be found in the intestinal tract of humans and other animals including seabirds.
