SWIM BILLBOARD LIFEGUARD

Daytona Beach, FL-It's a message that Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue officials hammer away at repeatedly and now "Swim Near A Lifeguard" is the subject of a billboard campaign in Florida. The billboards are sponsored by the Florida Beach Patrol Chiefs Association and the United States Lifesaving Association Southeast Region. The billboards are located as you enter Florida on the heavily traveled I-95, I-75 and I-10 interstates.

County Beach Safety Captain Tammy Marris says officers here welcome any method to spread the word, especially to visitors and notes the billboards are going up just before the Memorial Day kickoff to the summer beach season here when visitors flock to the local beaches.

The press release for the billboard campaign says drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death in the United States and the second leading cause of accidental death for persons aged 5 to 44. For children in the one to two-year age range, drowning is the leading cause of injury or death. In Florida, drowning is the leading cause of injury or death for persons under 15 years of age.
