Central Florida – SunRail has recently had its busiest day recorded since its launch in 2014.
On Saturday, March 18th, 12,842 people rode the SunRail throughout Central Florida, beating the previous record of 8,842 passengers according to a spokeswoman from Florida's Department of Transportation, Jen Horton. The only days that have come close to these records were on days where the fare was free. Saturday's numbers are about 3 times the usually daily amount of passengers.
SunRail service is usually limited to weekdays but 8 Saturdays were paid for by sponsors for weekend trials, costing $20,000+ every Saturday. March 18th was the last Saturday offered by SunRail during this trial run.
Stops in DeBary, Winter Park and Sand Lake Road have nearly the same amount of ridership. 4,000 departed at the Winter Park station from morning to evening.
The high number of riders seems to be because of the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival as well as sporting events like college basketball games and the Orlando City Soccer Match.
