Volusia County, FL – Tryouts for the Volusia County Junior Lifeguard Program summer camp are beginning soon.
On May 6, those interested in attending the camp may try out. In order to qualify, a participant should be between the ages of 9 and 15, and be able to swim 100 yards in under 2 minutes and 15 seconds, tread water for 5 minutes and swim underwater 10 feet.
The physical test will be administered at the following locations and time:
The week-long camp in June and July will train participants on water safety and first-aid and allow participants to take part in team activities like surfboard paddling, swimming, running and beach flags.
Ray Manchester, Beach Safety Director, believes the camp will prepare kids to become lifeguards and will build up their self-confidence.

Registration for physical tryouts can be done at www.Volusia.org/beach. Returning junior lifeguards are exempt from the physical test. The $150 tuition is required when you register.
An advanced camp for those who have complete 3 junior camps is also available. There, participants will learn CPR and first aid skills and advanced skills in stand-up paddle board, surf instruction and competition.
Tuition is $200 and it includes trips to the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse and the Marine Science Center. The camp runs from July 24 to July 28 at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse Point Park, 5000 S. Atlantic Ave., Ponce Inlet.
