Palm Coast, FL - A 17-year-old student at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast was arrested after he made up a false report of seeing a gun on campus.

According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office (FCSO), the student told another student that someone put a gun inside a car in the back parking lot of the school on Thursday morning. No one was said to be threatened. In response to the report, School Resource Deputies and FCSO deputies locked down the parking lot until a search of the area could be completed.

The Sheriff's explosive detection K-9 also searched the area, but no firearm was located. When the student who filed the report was interviewed, he admitted that he made the whole story up and never saw anyone with a gun on campus. The boy was arrested for filing a false report, which is a misdemeanor, according to FCSO. He was booked into the Flagler County Detention Facility and released to his parents.

“We take all reported incidents seriously,” says Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. “We moved quickly to ensure the safety of the students and teachers and put a lot of resources into this investigation. Ultimately, the report was unfounded, which we are grateful for; however, filing a false report is against the law and a waste of taxpayer dollars.”
