Stetson's Gilbert Selected In 1st Round Of MLB Draft

DeLand, FL - Stetson baseball keeps on making history, even when they're not on the field.

The video above shows how it looked inside the team's lounge room last night when junior right-handed pitcher Logan Gilbert learned he's a 1st round pick in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft.

The Apopka native went 14th overall to the Seattle Mariners, becoming the third Hatter ever to be selected in the first round. No other Stetson player has ever been drafted higher.

The others were Kevin Nicholson in 1997 (27th overall to the San Diego Padres) and Brian Snyder in 2003 (26th overall to the Oakland Athletics).

Gilbert has won 23 games and lost only two in his time at Stetson, winning the Atlantic Sun Conference's Pitcher of the Year award the last two seasons.

The last time Gilbert took the mound was on Saturday when he racked up 14 strikeouts in a victory over Oklahoma State to help the Hatters win the first-ever NCAA Baseball Tournament Regional in DeLand.

He currently leads all Division I pitchers in strikeouts this season with 157 and went over 300 career strikeouts during the OSU game.

Stetson heads on the road to play North Carolina in this weekend's Super Regional round for a shot at the College World Series. Gilbert will likely be Stetson's starting pitcher for Game 1 at 11 a.m. Friday from Chapel Hill.

Whoever wins two out of three games between the Hatters and Tar Heels moves on to Omaha later this month.

Game 2 is set for Saturday at Noon and Game 3, if needed, will be at Noon on Sunday.

All three games will be televised on ESPN2.
