Washington, DC-Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, the founder of Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, is one of three finalists for a statue at the U.S. Capitol to replace an image of a Confederate Army Civil War officer. Bethune was the only nominee to get a vote from all committee members on the Great Floridians Program panel at a hearing in Tallahassee this week. Bethune will be recommended to state legislation to replace the statue of Confederate Army General Edmund Kirby Smith at the U.S. Capitol. The other nominees are Marjory Stoneman Douglas and George Washington Jenkins. Both got two votes. Marjory Stoneman Douglas is credited with saving the Everglades. George Washington Jenkins is the founder of Publix. 2016 Southern Stone Communications Copyright
