Specialist Consults FCSO On Law Enforcement Risk Management

Gordon Graham is a 33-year veteran of the California Highway Patrol and an attorney and risk manager who draws on his experience to teach others how to be smart and safe on the job. He recently led a 2-day training session at FCSO for mid and upper-level supervisors, sworn and civilian. He covered topics like managing risk, decision making, performance evaluations, and "The Top 10 Things That Get Law Enforcement in Trouble." The goal of this seminar was to help FCSO employees recognize the risks they face and teach them how to prioritize those risks and act on them to protect the agency, community, nation, and the law enforcement profession. Public Information Officer Laura Williams was able to sit in on portions of these sessions, and  one of her takeaways was that failing to wear a seat-belt and being involved in an accident is one of the leading causes of death for law enforcement officers. "There are common sense things that officers can be doing," said Williams. "Wearing their seat-belts, wearing their bulletproof vests, wearing their reflective vests... All things we can be doing to help ourselves." This seminar was scheduled nearly 6 months ago, but it comes at a great time for law enforcement officers after several national events in July sparked tensions between officers and the communities they serve. As Sheriff James L. Manfre introduced Graham, he told his employees that it's his responsibility to bring each of his deputies safely home every night, and he hopes this training will make that job easier. Manfre hopes this training will be passed on from supervisors to the deputies that serve under them. "It's the supervisors' job to convince our deputies to practice the best way of doing things," said Manfre. "They need to know the best procedure and employ it immediately. Those policies and procedures aren't just lines in a book. They're the path to staying safe." gordon graham
