Daytona Beach, FL-Daytona Beach City Commission will spend money to buy more time to deal with the short-term homeless situation. City funds will be used to temporarily house 86 people in motels around the area. The Salvation Army's temporary shelter shuts down on Monday.
City Manager Jim Chisholm talked about Housing First which moves the homeless individual or household immediately from the streets or homeless shelters into their own apartments. Commissioner Rob Gilliland said this will allow the City time to come up with the right solution.
The special meeting was called so that the Commission could hear about other alternative buildings to the original selection of the National Guard Armory. There was no time for the presentation as the City Planning Commission had a meeting scheduled at 6 P.M.
A proposal to put a temporary homeless shelter in an empty city-owned building near Halifax Marina and Beach Street was met with opposition from residents and business owners in a packed, standing-room-only city commission meeting earlier this month.
