Silver Sands Middle Schooler, 15, Arrested For Threatening To Shoot Other Students

Port Orange, FL - A 15-year-old Silver Sands Middle School student was charged with a felony on Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly threatened to shoot other students in class with a shotgun, making him the 26th student to be charged by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office since the Parkland shooting.

VCSO says the incident actually happened on Tuesday, but a School Resource Deputy didn't hear about it until Wednesday after the same student was overheard saying that he had run out of bullets, and that's why students were still alive. The SRD was informed of the threat at 3:20 PM on Wednesday after several people reported that the 15-year-old had threatened to shoot other students. He's been charged with threatening to discharge a destructive device, which is a felony.

This was the second arrest related to school threats made at Silver Sands on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, an 11-year-old boy was arrested for saying on Tuesday that he would bomb the school. For earlier reporting on that story, click here.

Officials say the Sheriff's Office has a zero-tolerance policy for anyone making threats like these. The students who have been arrested for making school threats are facing serious criminal charges, and they, or their families, will be held responsible for paying the cost of the law enforcement response and prosecution, estimated at $1,032 per case.
