Daytona Beach, FL - The police officer shot in the right shoulder earlier this week in Midtown by a convicted felon with an AK-47 is out of the hospital and recovering at home.

Kevin Hird was discharged from Halifax Health Medical Center after needing two surgeries to fix the damage caused in Sunday's (November 25th) incident on the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and South Street.

Daytona Beach Police Department spokesperson Lyda Longa says Hird and the rest of the department are "extremely grateful" for the community's concern over his health.

"We ask that you continue praying for his recovery," Longa added.

A GoFund me account to assist Hird with paying bills while he recovers has raised over $3,000 as of 10:30 this morning, 1/5th of the $15,000 goal set by the Central Florida Police Benevolent Association.

Planet Smoothie will also host a fundraiser December 6th on Hird's behalf, with 20% of all store sales that day going to him and his family along with all sales from a raffle being held that same day. It's at the store location on 2525 West International Speedway Boulevard.

Hird's expected to make a full recovery, one which will likely take several months.

The 40-year-old man who shot Hird - Raymond Roberts - remains behind bars, facing three counts of attempted murder for shooting Hird and shooting at two other officers.
