Man Shot And In Custody In Connection To Shooting That Left Sheriff's Office K-9 Dead

Deltona, FL - Update: VCSO says a suspect has been shot and wounded and is now in custody in connection to last night's fatal shooting of K-9 Forrest. That suspect is Eddie Durell Powell. Reports indicate he was shot after he was spotted and reached for a gun. Powell's being charged with use of a deadly weapon against a police dog, 2 counts of attempted 2nd-degree murder with a firearm, possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, and failure to register a motor vehicle. Update: VCSO says the person of interest in yesterday's shooting that left a Sheriff's Office K-9 dead is 34-year-old Eddie Durell Powell, who deputies believe to be a transient in the Deltona area. He's originally from Georgia. VCSO believes hes armed with a black handgun and was last seen wearing a white shirt. He's about 6'1" and weighs around 200 lbs. Earlier Reporting: A Sheriff's Office K-9 was fatally shot last night during a chase with a wanted fugitive near Vann Park. The shooting happened around 7:16 PM when the suspect opened fire on deputies. The deputies returned fire. K-9 Forrest was rushed to DeLand Animal Hospital but couldn't be saved. Deputies went to the area on a tip from Crimestoppers about a wanted fugitive at a home on Wing Terrace. The suspect took off on a dirt bike which was later found abandoned. Deputies were talking to people at the home when they heard what sounded like someone jumping fences in the area. Air One responded as deputies set up a perimeter.  As deputies searched a nearby wooded area, the suspect fired at them hitting the dog. Deputies returned fire. The search was continuing early today. About 150 deputies and law enforcement officers are involved in the search for the suspect near Vann Park this morning.
