DeLeon Springs, FL - The owner of a service dog shot two of three other dogs, killing one, after the three dogs attacked the service dog in DeLeon Springs, Volusia County officials say. According to Volusia County Sheriff's Office reports, 67-year-old Esther Long was walking her husband's service dog, a brown and black German Shephard named LT, along Logger Creek Rd. in DeLeon Springs just after 10 AM on Monday. Three dogs reportedly left a property at 6015 Logger Creek Rd. and attacked the service dog. According to reports from Volusia County Animal Services, the three dogs that attacked the service dog were an American Pit Bull Terrier named Jax, an American Pit Bull Terrier mix named Chopper, and a Shar Pei mix named Onyx. Long told deputies that the three dogs "have been a problem and are constantly outside unsupervised and off the property." Long tried to separate the dogs, but she was bitten on the left hand and arm by one of the dogs, and a neighbor was bitten as well. Esther Long's husband, 69-year-old Richard Long, took out a revolver and shot two of the dogs in an attempt to protect his wife and his dog, according to Sheriff's Office reports. Onyx was grazed by a bullet, and Jax died after being shot, according to Volusia County Animal Services. Onyx, the dog who reportedly bit Esther Long, was placed on a 10-day-quarantine. Esther Long and the neighbor who was bitten were told to get immediate medical care, and LT was taken for immediate veterinary care. Photo courtesy J Paulson and Shutterstock.com.
