Daytona Beach, FL - A heat record that stood for 48 years in Daytona Beach has been broken. Derrick Weitlich from the National Weather Service said Daytona Beach saw it's hottest September ever, breaking a record set in 1970. The average temperature was 82.6 degrees, which is 3.1 degrees above normal.
Weitlich said a dominant ridge aloft across the southeast U.S. during September helped block any early season cold fronts from reaching the area. Surface high pressure kept an easterly flow across Central Florida, creating higher than normal temperatures and very dry conditions.
Daytona Beach saw only 1.44 inches of rainfall during September, which is the second driest September on record. The normal amount is close to seven inches of rain.
Weitlich said the same pattern will continue with temperatures above normal for October but he doesn't expect another heat record to be broken.
