Flagler Beach, FL-Sea Turtle Nesting Season begins Sunday and continues through October 31. In Flagler Beach, that means no beach fires allowed.

Flagler Beach Police Captain Matt Doughney is reminding locals and visitors that to protect the turtles, a city ordinance, 9-20, governs "Open Burning" within city limits. Subsection (b) (4) specifically states that "during the period between May and October 31, due to sea turtle nesting season, campfires and bonfires are prohibited from dusk until dawn."

Captain Doughney said the information has been posted on social media in the hope that there will be complete compliance with the ordinance. Those that don't comply, would get a warning the first time and a ticket the next.

Actually disturbing the turtles or their nests could result in arrest. Doughney encourages people to contact the police department if they have any questions.
