Daytona Beach, FL-A ribbon-cutting is set for Thursday at 5:30 PM for the first phase of what's dubbed "The Sweetheart Trail' in downtown Daytona Beach. The trail runs along the Halifax River downtown along Beach Street and a wooden pier pathway allows walkers and bikers to cross the busy intersection of International Speedway Boulevard by going under the ISB bridge.
The trail features sail-like structures that provide small shaded areas as well as water fountains for people and pets. The trail is part of the larger East Coast Greenway and includes bike stations which provide free air. The 2,900 mile Greenway runs from Maine to Key West.
The trail is named for the yacht owned by businessman Charles Grover Burgoyne and his wife Mary Therese MacCauley Burgoyne. The couple retired to Daytona Beach in 1894. The 75-foot-yacht was built in 1898 on City Island.
The trail in Daytona Beach begins at Sickler Park and goes under the Seabreeze Bridge then south to Beville Road. The construction has been funded by some city dollars as well as state grant money. Future sections are now in the design phase.
