Residents Should Prep For Strong Winds As Matthew Approaches

hurricane blur Flagler County, FL - Flagler County Emergency Management is urging residents to prepare for Hurricane Matthew and to take steps to prevent storm damage in and outside the house. “We don’t know exactly where Matthew will hit, but all of the models indicate that we are going to have some strong winds by mid-week. Shoring up your property will lessen the risk of damage to your home,” said Flagler County Public Safety Emergency Manager Steve Garten. “If you have trees that are close to your house, you should check them for weak limbs and branches. Of course, prune back anything that is overhanging a structure.” People should tie down, get rid of, or bring inside things that are outdoors that could be torn loose or blown away - that includes potted plants. Chemicals, fertilizers and other toxic materials should be kept in a secure place indoors. Propane tanks should be kept away from heat sources like water heaters and appliances. “We urge you to take care of these things now, ahead of any effects of the hurricane impacting Flagler County,” County Administrator Craig Coffey said. “It will help us to help you.” And don't forget to check on your neighbors to see if they need help, especially if they're elderly or their mobility is limited. Flagler County issued a state of local emergency at noon on Tuesday. “We have to plan for the worst and hope for the best,” Flagler County Administrator Craig Coffey said. “The track continues to fluctuate and we have to be ready to assist our residents in any way we can. A small deviation of the track could make the determination whether we have hurricane-force winds or not.” Flagler has activated its Emergency Operations Center at level 2 for command and general staff. "Emergency Management across the state is monitoring the situation very closely and making preparations," said Garten. "As the storm approaches, please make sure you have a plan in place for you and your family, including your pets, that includes providing for food, water and medications for several days."
