Registration For Volusia School's Drivers Education Program Begins Soon

Volusia County, FL - Soon, registration will open for Volusia County School's fall Drivers Education courses.

Beginning on Wednesday, August 16, students can pick up a registration form from their high school's guidance department. Official registration begins on Thursday, August 17 at students' home high school guidance office. Students must bring a valid learners permit in order to sign up. Brochures about the program are also available at each high school.

Registration for the course is on a first-come, first-serve basis, but students may be added to a waiting list if the class meets maximum capacity.

The Drivers Education program is free of charge and will count as a half-credit elective. By the end of the course, students will earn a paperless waiver of the road test needed in order to get a driver's license.

The after school Drivers Education program will start on September 5 and will end on December 7. The course will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 PM to 6:30 PM, with no class on Thursday, November 23.

The afterschool program is tentatively set to be held at the following schools:

  • Atlantic High, 1250 Reed Canal Rd., Port Orange
  • DeLand High, 800 North Hill Ave., DeLand (Monday and Tuesday class)
  • Mainland High, 1255 West International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach
  • New Smyrna Beach High, 1015 Tenth St., New Smyrna Beach
  • Pine Ridge High, 925 Howland Blvd., Deltona
  • Spruce Creek High, 801 Taylor Rd., Port Orange
  • University High, 1000 West Rhode Island Ave., Orange City

The Saturday Drivers Education program will start on September 9 and will end on November 18. The course will be held on Saturdays from 8 AM to 3 PM and students will need to bring lunch with them and wear closed toe shoes.

The Saturday program is tentatively set to be held at the following schools:

  • DeLand High, 800 North Hill Ave., DeLand
  • Deltona High, 100 Wolf Pack Run, Deltona
  • Mainland High, 1255 West International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach
  • New Smyrna Beach High, 1015 Tenth St., New Smyrna Beach
  • Pine Ridge High, 925 Howland Blvd., Deltona
  • Seabreeze High, 2700 North Oleander Ave., Daytona Beach
  • Spruce Creek High, 801 Taylor Rd., Port Orange

In order to participate in the program, students must:

  • Be currently enrolled at a Volusia County public school, private school, school of choice or home school program
  • Be eligible to drive
  • Register at their zoned high school
  • Be 15 years or older on or before the first day of the program
  • Complete one full year of high school on or before the first day of the program
  • Have a restricted license/learner’s permit upon registering and on the first day of the program
  • Not have received credit for a Drivers Education course

This program is funded by the Dori Slosberh Driver Education Trust Fund, not by the district.
