Public Viewing This Weekend For Senator Hukill

Port Orange, FL - The late state Senator Dorothy Hukill will be remembered this weekend in Port Orange.

A public viewing will take place between noon and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Volusia Memorial Funeral Home on Clyde Morris Boulevard in the city where she was once the mayor.

Hukill's family posted that information on her personal Facebook page.

Hukill - a Republican who had been fighting cancer off and on since 2016 - passed away earlier this week at the age of 72.

A wreath in her honor now sits in front of the Florida Senate chamber doors in Tallahassee, where she had been a member since 2012 after eight years in the Florida House.

The family plans to hold a smaller, more formal memorial service afterward, according to a memo from Florida Senate President Joe Negron to lawmakers and staff members.

Hukill's seat is up for election in November, with Democrat Melissa Martin on the ballot.

Republicans have yet to name Hukill's replacement, but regardless of who replaces her, Hukill’s name will remain on the ballot. A vote for her will count as a vote for whoever the GOP chooses as her replacement.
