Port Orange, FL - Port Orange is warning its water customers to be wary of a new phone scam that's making the rounds.

City officials announced on Thursday that multiple calls have come in from residents recently saying someone pretending to be from the city called to demand payment on past due water bills.

Port Orange spokesman Kent Donahue says the scam appears to be primarily targeting the city's water users.

"The caller states residents must call a 1-888 number to make a payment within 1 hour," Donahue added. "If not, their water service will be disconnected."

At least 9 such calls have been reported to the city so far.

Donahue added that anyone who gets such a phone call should disregard the message or report it to the city's water department at 386-506-5720.

Residents with concerns can check their bill by either contacting Port Orange's Water Department or by checking their online account.
