Port Orange, FL - A Port Orange Police officer was recognized for outstanding achievement at Tuesday's Port Orange City Council meeting after he saved the life of a suicidal man. Sergeant Steven Nagy was presented with the Award for Achievement following his efforts to prevent a man from killing himself in August, according to a news release from the Port Orange Police Department (POPD). POPD says that Nagy responded to a call on August 29 where a man's wife said that the man intended to hang himself. When Nagy arrived at the scene, the man was hanging from a yellow rope that was tied to the staircase in the home. Nagy immediately cut the rope, removed the rope from around the man's neck, and lowered the man to the floor and allowed him to breathe, according to POPD. Fire Rescue and EVAC arrived on scene and transported the man to Halifax Health. The police department credits Nagy's attention to detail and quick thinking with his ability to save the man's life.
