Port Orange, FL - The Port Orange Police Department (POPD) has received a $12,000 DUI Enforcement grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). As part of the new DUI enforcement effort, POPD officers with specialized training will conduct three DUI checkpoints in Port Orange. The locations and times of these checkpoints will be based on statistical analysis of previous crashes and DUI arrests, according to POPD. There will also be monthly patrols of the city that are focused on drunk and impaired driving. The department announced the enforcement last week. The money from the FDOT grant will be used to cover overtime costs for the officers staffing checkpoints and special patrols. POPD will also conduct a public awareness campaign aimed at preventing drunk driving. The campaign will use both traditional and social media. POPD says that, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), a person is injured every two minutes and killed every 51 minutes in DUI related crashes. POPD hopes to reduce DUI related injuries and deaths in the City of Port Orange, which is home to more than 60,000 residents. Photo courtesy of Muskoko Stock Photo and Shutterstock.com.
