Port Orange, FL - The Port Orange Police Department is now taking applications for its 2017 Citizens Police Academy.

"Our Citizens Police Academy is a yearly 9-week training class that we have for our Port Orange residents," said Community Relations Officer Evan Doyle. "Essentially what it is is an in-depth look into what we do, why we do it, and also how we do it."

Classes meet on Monday nights from 6 to 9 for 9 weeks straight beginning January 30th. There's also 1 Saturday morning class for live-fire handgun safety training. The date of that session hasn't been announced yet.

Representatives from the POPD will teach a variety of subjects each week to help attendees get a better understanding of modern policing and its challenges. Participants will get the chance to see police practices and equipment rarely seen by the general public.

The class is free but it's limited to the 1st 40 eligible participants that apply. The application deadline is Monday, January 16. To apply go to Port-Orange.org.
