Port Orange, FL - A fire in the 5700 block of Riverside Drive consumed 2 houses in Port Orange on Wednesday afternoon.

The Fire Department was called at about 2:15 PM. The first arriving unit found the single family house at 5722 Riverside Dr fully involved in fire. The fire extended to a home next door, at 5718 Riverside Dr. That home was occupied by a retired Port Orange firefighter who was the original 911 caller reporting the fire next door.

The fires were brought under control at about 4:20 PM, but according to Port Orange Fire Chief Kenneth Fustin, "both homes were a total loss."

On Wednesday evening, Fustin said there appeared to be a car in the carport of the home where the fire originated. It's not known for sure what caused the fire, but Fustin says the point of origin could have been in or near the carport of that house.

POPD got help from fire rescue teams from Daytona Beach, South Daytona, Edgewater, Ponce Inlet, New Smyrna Beach, and Volusia County.
