Flagler Beach, FL - The Flagler Beach Police Department is warning citizens of a phone scam that's making the rounds.
So far there have been no victims in Flagler Beach, and the FBPD hopes to keep it that way.
The scam involves an automated call or a fraudulent caller telling people they have an active federal arrest warrant for tax fraud, and they demand payment of fines. The phone number associated with this scam is 202-621-0123.
Similar crimes have been committed in the past, including a 2014 scam in Dayton, Ohio, where the scammer claimed to be from the US Marshals Service, but that federal law enforcement agency doesn't ask for payments of fines or fees over the phone for people with outstanding arrest warrants.
If you get a call like this, be careful, hang up, and contact your local law enforcement agency. "'Tis the season for people to try to steal your money," said FBPD Chief Matt Doughney. "Hopefully we can be the Grinch to the people that are trying to steal honest people's money."
