Port Orange, FL - Just days after a fatal small-plane crash at a gated aviation community in Port Orange, another small plane crashes in a wooded area next to that same community.
This time, a small propeller plane went down just before 4:30 p.m. today at the Spruce Creek Farms subdivision off State Road 415. That's about half a mile from the Spruce Creek Fly-In.
Volusia County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Laura Williams says the pilot - 71-year-old Arthur Taxman - suffered a minor head injury and is being checked out further at Halifax Health Medical Center.
"Only the pilot was on board and, thankfully, he got himself out of the plane," Williams added.
Deputies say the crash site is in a heavily wooded area, around 50 feet from a home.
It's not clear at this time exactly what caused the crash or where the plane took off from originally. VCSO tells us that the plane suffered some sort of mechanical failure.
The Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating.
Earlier this week, a 22-year-old Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University student was killed after a single-engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff. The pilot of that plane remains at Halifax Health Medical Center in critical condition.
