Daytona Beach, FL-Hearing about gas shortages and spiking prices at the pump after the Colonial gas pipeline break? You can chill a little. Gas experts say the break is having little to no effect on Florida because the state gets most gasoline supplied by ship or barge from refineries in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Stations as far north as Virginia are seeing prices at the pump spike by 40 cents a gallon and some stations running out of gas.
In the Daytona Beach area, AAA says the average price now for a gallon of unleaded self-serve regular gas is $2.13. That's down from the previous week when the same gallon of gas was $2.16. The current price is the same as it was a year ago.
The situation in the southeast U.S. is likely to be problematic for awhile. "Prices are likely to rise even further until the pipeline is fully restored," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Once repaired, prices should quickly begin to decline. Motorists are encouraged to follow their normal driving habits and to not draw abnormally large amounts of gasoline from the pump."
