Fire Causes $300,000 In Damage To Pierson Fernery Garage

Pierson, FL - A fire at a Pierson fernery garage caused a total of $300,000 worth of damage to the garage and the fernery's farm equipment and vehicles on Wednesday night. The fire occurred at around 9 p.m. at Richard Hagstrom Ferneries on East Washington Avenue. Firefighters responded to the scene five minutes after they were dispatched, and the garage was completely engulfed in flames when they arrived, according to Volusia County Fire Rescue. About 26 firefighters from Volusia County, DeLand, Putnam County, and Lake County all responded, according to VCFS spokesperson Shelley Szafraniec. Crews had to return the following morning after hot spots flared up. No one was injured. Fire rescue officials say the fire caused a total loss of $50,000 to the garage and $250,000 worth of damage to the building's contents. Officials are still working to confirm the cause.
