Partial Solar Eclipse; ERAU Astronomical Observatory Open House

Posted

Daytona Beach, FL - A partial solar eclipse is happening this weekend and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) is hosting an open house at its Observatory a few days later.

According to ERAU, the eclipse this Sunday, Feb. 26, is the the last solar eclipse until a total solar eclipse set to occur over the U.S. this summer, August 21. Sunday's eclipse will take place in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Amateur Astronomy Club at ERAU's Daytona Beach campus, 600 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., is hosting an Astronomical Observatory Open House, Friday, March 3.

The open house will be a great opportunity for members of the community to observe the night sky through the Observatory's telescopes and ask questions. A public lecture will preceed the open house. Dr. Gabriela Gonzalez, Louisiana State University, will be speaking about "Colliding Black Holes and Gravity Waves."

In addition to the Observatory's 1-meter Ritchey-Chretien reflecting telescope and chance to view through it, there are 6 rooftop-observing stations for smaller telescopes.

The lecture begins at 7 PM, followed by observations from 8 to 11 PM, at the College of Arts and Sciences Building. Another open house is set for March 31.
