Ormond Beach Police Are Now Issuing Tickets As Part Of Traffic Safety Program

Posted

Ormond Beach, FL – The Ormond Beach Police Department (OBPD) is now including citations for violations to bicycle and pedestrian safety laws in their ongoing High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) program.

The OBPD has focused on crosswalk violations and has been giving out warnings and distributing materials to educate drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians who violate the law. Now, effective immediately, the OBPD will be giving traffic violators tickets (Florida Uniform Traffic Citations).

Pedestrian and bicycle traffic infractions will cost violators at least $64.50 and vehicle traffic infractions will cost drivers at least $116.00.

The OBPD started the program because Volusia County is in the top 10 of Florida counties when it comes to the number of bicyclist and pedestrian deaths.

The HVE program aims to lower a number of crashes and educate people on how to stay safe at crosswalks. Last year in Ormond Beach alone, there were 16 vehicle/pedestrian and 13 vehicle/bicycle crashes. Some of these crashes even resulted in serious harm to the parties involved.

The majority of the complaints from Ormond Beach citizens about crosswalks were around the beach approaches on SR A1A and SR 40 and Lewis Street.
