Man Arrested For Causing Crash That Killed Unborn Child In Orange City

Orange City, FL - A man is arrested today for causing a crash that resulted in the death of an unborn child in Orange City more than two years ago.

69-year-old Leo Britt was driving a 2013 Buick passenger car southbound on Volusia Avenue in Orange City in January 2016. A witness told police that the Buick was weaving left and right and got into a front-end collision with a 2013 Saturn near 1065 Volusia Avenue.

One of the passengers in the Saturn was a then 26-year-old woman who was pregnant. She, the driver of the car and another passenger all suffered injuries as a result of the crash. The pregnant woman had an injured knee and hip.

The woman later gave birth, but the baby was stillborn, according to police reports. An autopsy by the Medical Examiner's Office later determined that the death of the unborn child was a result of the injuries sustained by the mother during the accident.

Police say that just minutes before the crash in Orange City, Britt was involved in a separate crash in Deland near the area of South Woodland Boulevard and Firehouse Road. Police reports show that Britt fled the scene of that crash.

Orange City Police Department filed an official charging affidavit on April 2 of this year.

Britt was booked into the Volusia County Jail today and faces a charge of manslaughter for the death of the unborn child. He was held on $10,000 bond.
