Ormond Beach, FL-A program that is part of the state's "On Guard for Seniors" initiative, in partnership with the city of Ormond Beach, will offer a workshop to teach people how to "Be Scam Smart" on Thursday.

Denishia Sword, Department of Financial Services spokesperson, said the workshop is not limited to seniors. Family members, caregivers and anyone who wants to learn more about scams and how to avoid them is invited.

Sword said there are a number of scams, such as the handyman scam. The scammer will approach a senior and tell them something on their home needs to be fixed, such as the roof or the driveway. They ask for money up front for materials and never come back.  Another common scam is the "grandparents scam" where the scammer contacts the senior saying a grandchild needs money. One more is the "utility scam." The scammer asks the senior to pay their bill with a pre-paid debit card.

Caregivers can help seniors protect their identity by shredding documents and making sure social security, drivers license and other important numbers are not shared.

The Operation S.A.F.E. Workshop takes place Thursday, July 21st, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the City Commission Chambers at City Hall located at 22 South Beach Street.
