OPBD Launches Enforcement Campaign Targeting Crosswalk Violations

Ormond Beach, FL – The Ormond Beach Police Department (OBPD) has announced its participation in a High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) campaign to tackle problems relating to bicycle and pedestrian safety that affect the city.

OBPD has identified area throughout the city that are considered high risk for pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle violations. During the campaign, police will target those areas and offer educational materials, give warnings, and provide enforcement to violators. According to OBPD, tickets for bicycle and pedestrian violations begin at $64.50 while tickets for vehicle violations at crosswalks begin at $116.00.

The campaign seeks to address the fact that Volusia County falls within the top 10 Florida counties with the highest amount of pedestrian and bicyclist deaths. OBPD hopes to reduce the number of fatalities by targeting the incidents that cause these kinds of crashes. Through education, OBPD seeks to have every pedestrian using crosswalks to ensure their safety.

Last year, 18 vehicles vs. pedestrian accidents and 14 vehicles vs. bicyclist accidents occurred within the city limits of Ormond Beach. Many of the crashes resulted in serious injuries and even death in some cases. OBPD reports that citizens find the beach approaches on SR A1A and the area around SR 40/Lewis Street have the most incidents of vehicles not stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks.
