Online Applications Now Available For School Choice, 2017-18 School Year

Posted

Volusia County, FL - Online applications are now available for parents who are considering enrolling their children in a school other than their assigned (zoned) school.

The Florida Legislature adopted Controlled Open Enrollment, also known as "choice law," to be implemented in the 2017-18 school year. This allows parents to enroll a child in any school in the state of Florida. That choice, however, is limited to schools with capacity and parents must provide transportation. A lottery procedure will be used if there are more applicants than seats.

In Volusia, a procedure for this process is already in place. It was formerly known as a variance. The new controlled enrollment process is very similar.

One important change is the ability to apply online through the Parent Portal. If a parent is new to the district or does not have a Parent Portal account, paper applications are available at any school during normal business hours.

The deadline to apply for the 2017-18 school year is the last day of school, May 26, 2017.
