OBPD To Start High Visibility Enforcement Pedestrian & Bicyclist Safety Program

Posted

Ormond Beach, FL – The Ormond Beach Police Department (OBPD) has announced its participation in a High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) program to ensure the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists in the City.

The OBPD plans to focus on traffic, pedestrian, and bicyclist violations at crosswalks. Police will educate, issue warnings, and enforce traffic laws in high-risk areas.

According to the OBPD, Volusia County ranks in the top 10 Florida Counties with the highest number of bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities. So far in 2017, there have been 12 vehicle vs. pedestrian crashes and 14 vehicle vs. bicyclist accidents in Ormond Beach. Some of these accidents have resulted in serious injury to those involved.

Police say that there are constant complains from residents about traffic violations at crosswalks near the beach approaches on A1A and SR 40/Lewis Street. The OBPD hopes that through education and enforcement, they can reduce the number of crashes. During the first phase of the program, police will distribute educational pamphlets and issue written warnings to violators.
