NSB Due East Fishing Dock Reopens After Repairs Of Hurricane Matthew Damage

New Smyrna Beach, FL - After being closed since it was damaged in Hurricane Matthew, the Due East Pier and fishing dock in New Smyrna Beach is now reopened. The Due East Pier is located off Peninsula Ave. on the barrier island, according to the Public Information Office of New Smyrna Beach. The pier faces the Indian River and is accessible by East St. City officials announced that the Due East fishing dock was closed on November 22 of 2016 after the hurricane create "unsafe conditions" at the dock. "Contractors were backed up from all of the hurricane damage throughout our entire county, so we just finally got to open this pier," says Anna Hackett, Public Information Officer for New Smyrna Beach. The pier and the fishing dock were reopened on Friday, May 11. The recovery process for reconstructing the pier after Hurricane Matthew cost $159,125. “Local fisherman were ready and had their lines in the water minutes after we opened the pier,” maintenance operations director Faith Miller says.
