New Smyrna Beach, FL - The New Smyrna Beach Fire Department (NSBFD) has a new fire truck, the 2017 Sutphen SPH 100 Tower truck.

This new fire truck will replace an older 1994 model.

"It has a 500 horsepower Cummins motor on it. It carries 440 gallons of water. It has 600 ft of 5 in supply hose, the hose that we attach to the hydrant to supply it," says Lt. Mike Greene, the public information officer with the NSBFD. "It can pump 2000 gallons a minute of water. It has 400 ft of 1 3/4 in attack line on it also. And it reaches heights of 100 ft."

The new truck also has a better turning radius.

The Central Florida Fire Academy is visiting the NSBPD on the week of June 5 to teach the crew how to operate the new truck.

"The training consists of two weeks," says Greene. "We're going to be doing some at the high school, we're going to be doing some at Minorca Beach, the high-rises that we have at the inlet and it's going to be classroom training. The first week is the end of May and the second week will be the end of June."

Lt. Greene said that the crew is excited to be able to use the new machine to its fullest capability.
