New Smyrna Beach, FL – Charges are pending after a 49-year-old motorcyclist dies following a two-vehicle accident just south of Lake Ashby.

The Florida Highway Patrol says it happened around 11:30 a.m. yesterday on State Road 415 at the Ashby Cove Lane intersection in an unincorporated part of New Smyrna Beach, just north of Osteen and east of Deltona Lakes.

FHP Lieutenant Kim Montes tells us the motorcyclist – who has yet to be identified – was heading south on SR 415 in a 2017 Suzuki when he apparently tried to get around a 2014 Ford F-250 truck with a trailer attached to the back that was also going south on 415.

“[The Suzuki] was traveling a few vehicles behind [the Ford],” Montes added. “[The Ford] slowed to make a left turn [onto Ashby Cove]. As [the Ford] made the left turn, [the driver of the Suzuki] passed the southbound vehicles in front of [him] and the front of [the Suzuki] struck the left side of [the Ford].”

The Suzuki driver – who Montes says was wearing a helmet – died later on at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford from his injuries after paramedics took him there.

The driver of the Ford – identified as 60-year-old Mark Sutton of Osteen – wasn’t injured and was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to troopers at the scene.

It doesn’t appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, per the FHP crash report.
