DeLand, FL - A 47-year-old man died on Monday afternoon from injuries sustained 5 days earlier in a chain-reaction crash in DeLand where he was riding a motorcycle. There were 2 other vehicles involved in that accident but no one else was hurt.
The accident happened on Wednesday morning when a vehicle heading east on Saxon Blvd made a sudden turn onto Diane Terrace, setting off a chain reaction behind it. The 1st vehicle behind the turning car was forced to slam on its break, the 2nd vehicle hit the back of that car, then the motorcyclist (Timothy Ervin of Altamonte Springs) crashed into the next vehicle in the line. Ervin wasn't wearing a helmet and was thrown from the motorcycle. He suffered severe head injuries and was rushed by ambulance to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford where he was operated on.
Initially reported to be in critical condition, Ervin was recovering in intensive care and had been upgraded to stable condition. But he took a turn for the worse and was declared dead at 12:39 PM on Monday.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident.
