Flagler Beach, FL - Last year, we didn't see any mother-calf pairings during the birthing season.
This year, North Atlantic right whales are popping up a lot more often in the Volusia-Flagler area.
The Marineland Right Whale Project found a mother and her new baby off Flagler Beach yesterday morning (February 12th), the sixth confirmed sighting so far this season.
That sighting comes a week after a different mother and baby were spotted near Daytona Beach Shores.
There hasn't been this many confirmed mother-baby pairings for the endangered species locally since 2016, according to Marineland.
Experts estimate around 400 North Atlantic right whales worldwide.
