Meetings Set On Plan For Flood-prone New Smyrna Islesboro Neighborhood

New Smyrna Beach, FL-Flooding issues could soon be a thing of the past in the Islesboro neighborhood in New Smyrna Beach. Coming changes include significant drainage and flood control upgrades. City Engineer Kyle Fegler said two meetings will be held on August 2 to give residents information on the options available to fix the problems. Residents are encouraged to attend and give their input on the information presented. The first meeting begins at 5:30 P.M. It will feature three different alternatives for safety improvements on Art Center Avenue. The meeting focuses on the adjoining property owners. The primary meeting is scheduled at 6 P.M. is for the major segment of residents in the Islesboro neighborhood. City staff and consultants will share the proposed drainage improvements in the Islesboro subdivision. The Utilities Commission will also be a part of this meeting. Fegler said the infrastructure was put in long before the subdivision. He said when the sewers and pipes were installed, the area was at 40 percent build-out. Fegler said it's now 75 to 80 percent build-out. The consultant will go through the options and the plans will be available for public view. The City also plans to pave all of the shellrock roadways, which will clean up the run off into the storm drains. The two public meetings will be held Tuesday, August 2, at First Baptist Church, New Smyrna Beach, 200 Faulkner Street.
