Volusia County, FL- The Tobacco Free Florida - Volusia County Partnership meets Monday to discuss ways to stop kids from smoking and assess current tobacco control policies. Kristen Mialki, Volusia County Tobacco Prevention Program Manager, said that right now, there are no policies in place.

Mialki said tobacco companies market products with display racks and signage near candy and snack products that attract young people. She said the tobacco industry spends more than $8 billion annually advertising at the point of sale.

Tobacco is the number-one cause of preventable death and disease in the U.S. and Florida. Mialki said just last year, cancer was the number one cause of death in Florida and 30 percent of those were tobacco-related.

Mialki said that there is free help and many resources available to quit smoking.

The public is invited to attend the meeting on Monday at 4 p.m., at the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County, 1845 Holsonback Road, Daytona Beach.
