Florida - Voters in Florida convincingly approved Amendment 2 in Tuesday's election, legalizing medical marijuana in the Sunshine State.

A similar amendment was on the ballot in 2014, but it didn't reach the 60% approval needed to pass. According to John Morgan, founder of the nationwide personnel injury and consumer protection law firm Morgan & Morgan and a big financial contributor to the pro Amendment 2 movement, he and other proponents of the amendment learned from the mistakes they made back in 2014 and used those lessons to get what he describes as a record turnout. The amendment passed with 71% of the vote. It needed 60% to pass.

The amendment will allow those with cancer, HIV/Aids, epilepsy, and several other conditions to use marijuana if it's recommended by their doctor.

This made Florida the 26th state to legalize marijuana for medical or recreational use and the only southern state with any form of legalization.

The FL Department of Health has until July to pass new regulations, and the state won't start registering dispensaries and growers until October, 2017.
