Mayor Henry Discusses His Take On Daytona Beach's Homeless Issue

Posted
homeless close up Daytona Beach, FL - Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry was on Daytona's Morning News recently, where he discussed his vision for the area's homeless problem. According to Henry, progress had stalled under the County's previous leadership, and he hopes the new County Council will "be a little more agreeable and take greater leadership." Henry said he's always been in favor of a shelter on County-owned land on Red Johns Rd or in that area. It's important to him, and other city staff, that any shelter or facility be outside of the core of Daytona Beach. "We need a facility that allows us to provide both the services and a place of refuge for those who are suffering from the scourge of homelessness," he said. "But the primary thing that we want to do is we want to be able to help them graduate from that condition." Mayor Henry also said he's committed to providing $400,000 towards a facility in the east side of the County. One of his main concerns at this point is making sure the city is ready for the International Shriners convention, which is scheduled to be held at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach from July 9 to 13. It's estimated that 10,000 - 20,000 visitors will be in the area for that event - possibly the biggest convention every in Daytona Beach. Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry
