DeBary, FL - A man with new teeth also gets an orange jumpsuit after he steals over $40,000 from a man with dementia for dental work and another $10,000 for a new dog.

That's the fate for 52-year-old Timothy Powell after he stole over $50,000 with the stolen identity of a DeBary man with dementia, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

The report shows that VCSO was originally tipped off about the fraud back on September 18th, after a caretaker for a man with dementia contacted the sheriff's office, saying she had a bill that did not belong to her client.

According to her narrative, her client received a bill on August 17th from a company known as Greensky LLC saying that he owed $25,154.01 to the  Friedman Dental Group in Plantation, Florida.

She would then inform Friedman about the fraudulent charges and began the paperwork to clear her client's name.

Then, again on September 4th, he received another bill, but this time from the NBT Bank for about $16,000 for a transaction that was made on August 7th. She later found out the bill was also for the Friedman Dental Group.

The caregiver then contacted NBT Bank and told them about the fraudulent credit loan. She later received a letter telling her that an unknown person obtained a line of credit using her client's signature, social security number, date of birth, address and employment, saying it was for dental services at the Friedman Dental Group.

The next day (September 18th), VCSO investigators would make contact with the manager of the Friedman Dental Group, who was then made aware about the fraudulent charges and ID.

She told investigators that the suspect in question came to the office on four separate occasions. They first came on August 2nd for a consultation, August 6th for preparation work, August 9th for extractions and August 16th for a post-op appointment.

Two separate billings came from those dates, one for $25,154.01 and the other for $16,000, matching the amounts that the caregiver told VCSO.

According to the manager, the customer used a Connecticut drivers license bearing the name of the victim with dementia, as well as his social security number and home address in DeBary.

She would then give VCSO investigators all of the applications and paperwork used, which they would use to lift fingerprints from.

Investigators were able to establish an identity of the suspect as Powell.

During the course of their investigation, the caregiver contacted VCSO again and said another fradulent charge came to her client, this time for the amount of $9958.69.

According to her statement, this time the charge was for a French bulldog from a store known as Petland, also in Plantation.

After getting in contact with management at Petland, VCSO found that the same fake driver's license was also used for this transaction, just for a different bank known as Comenity Bank.

On November 5th, VCSO investigators finally made contact with Powell and interviewed him at the Volusia County Jail.

It was during that interview that Powell admitted to stealing the DeBary man's personal information for the multiple fraudulent transactions.

Just a little over two weeks later (November 13th), Powell was arrested and booked at Volusia County Jail for fraud charges.

However, according to VCSO, another incident in Plantation, similar to the one associated with Powell, is causing a separate investigation to be launched. This is leading investigators to believe a second defendant may be involved.

No details have been released yet about the second investigation.
