Man Pulled From The Ocean In New Smyrna Beach, Dies From Apparent Drowning

New Smyrna Beach, FL - A 27-year-old man from Winter Park was pulled from the ocean in New Smyrna Beach on Monday afternoon, but despite the best efforts of bystanders and County Beach Safety officers, he died from an apparent drowning.

Volusia County Beach Safety was called at around 6:45 PM about a man found in the water in the 1700 block south of New Smyrna Beach. When officers arrived, they found that bystanders had pulled the 27-year-old man from the water and were performing CPR. Beach Safety personnel took over rescue efforts until the victim was brought to Bert Fish Hospital where he was pronounced dead from an apparent drowning.

The victim was later identified as Steven Rix who was visiting the beach with friends. The official cause of death won't be released until autopsy and toxicology results come in.
