Daytona Beach, FL - Traffic detectives are investigating after a man in a wheelchair was hit by a car on Daytona's beachside.

It happened around 10 o'clock last night on State Road A1A near the Glenview Boulevard beach access, just north of the Ocean Breeze Club.

Daytona Beach Police Department spokesperson Lyda Longa says the victim - yet to be identified by DBPD - is now in the intensive care unit at Halifax Health Medical Center with a severe head injury.

"Upon investigation, officers learned that a man in a wheelchair was crossing Atlantic Avenue from east to west," Longa stated. "The man was not in the crosswalk, but in the middle of the roadway."

That's when a driver - identified by DBPD as Kathryn Talbott - struck the man as she drove north on A1A, per Longa.

"Talbott told officers that she did not see the man in the wheelchair," Longa added. "There was no indication that Talbott was under the influence or that she had caused the crash."

Officers are now trying to contact the man's relatives.

Charges have not been filed at this time.
