Man Dead In Exchange Of Gunfire With Deputies Near Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach, FL-A man was found dead after exchanging gunshots with deputies near Ormond Beach last night. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating. That's standard in law enforcement involved shootings. The man is identified as 38-year-old Michael Hartman. Deputies went to the home in the 3600 block of Plantation Drive just before 10 PM for a report of a man threatening suicide. The man's wife and children were able to escape the home and hide in nearby woods. The children range in age from 2 to 14. Hartman reportedly had a gun shop inside the home and numerous weapons. Deputies say the man opened fire on them from inside the home around 10:17 PM and they returned gunfire. The man was confirmed dead at the scene and it's not known yet whether he took his own life or was shot by deputies. No deputies were hurt. The deputies who fired their weapons are:

Deputy Cody Cochran, age 26, hired in November 2011.

Deputy Corey Rittenour, age 35, hired in July 2010.
