Man Arrested In Fatal Hit-&-Run That Left 14-Year-Old Orange City Girl Dead

Orange City, FL - Police say a man is behind bars after he killed a 14-year-old Orange City girl in an early morning hit-and-run on Tuesday. Orange City Police were called to the area of US 17-92 just south of Enterprise Rd. at around 2:10 AM on August 1st in reference to a young girl in the road who may have been hit by a vehicle. When officers got to the scene they performed CPR until fire/rescue workers arrived and pronounced her dead. At about 2:24 AM law enforcement got a call about a vehicle that looked like it had hit an animal. Investigators determined that the damaged van was being driven by Walter J. Gunther. The 30-year-old admitted to police that he was driving the van with a suspended driver's license. He was arrested and brought to the Orange City Police Department without incident. Gunther will be taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail. He's facing charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and driving on a suspended drivers license, with a total bond amount of $15,500.
