Daytona Beach, FL - A 19-year-old Mainland High School student was hit and killed by a vehicle today as she crossed W. ISB at Nova Road just after 8 AM on her way to school. The victim is identified as Stephanie Boebert. She was crossing west on W. ISB when she was hit by a vehicle driven by 62-year-old Paul Dvorak. Police say he was heading east on ISB and turned onto Nova Road, where he hit Boebert who died at the scene. School officials say she was walking to school after she apparently missed her regular school bus. Police officials say the investigation is ongoing. Dr. Cheryl Salerno, Mainland's Principal, put out a statement about the accident and Boebert. Boebert, who was a special needs student, earned her high school diploma last year but deferred her graduation status in order to stay at Mainland for another year to get more experiences in learning life and employability skills. She was part of the AFJROTC program and was a student aide for school offices. "We are deeply saddened to lose this very special Buccaneer," wrote Dr. Salerno. "To say that our hearts are broken could only begin to describe the emptiness we now face each day without Stephanie." Grief counseling already started today to help those who knew Stephanie.
